Some Essential things in writing Resume:
· The Length of Resume: One page whenever possible. Two pages, if not, Since the purpose is to help the employer make a quick decision about sending you an interview invite and shorter, the better is your resume . The length of the resume should be correlated to the time the employer can possible allot for you rather than the length or breadth of your career.
· Strengths are highlighted / weaknesses de-emphasized. Focus on whatever is strongest and most impressive in your profile. Make strategic choices as ‘how to organize’, ‘order’, and convey your skills and background in your resume. Think about whether to include the information at all, placement in overall structure of the resume, location on the page itself or within a section, ordering of information, use of design elements (such as boldface to highlight, italics to minimize.
· The Address The only reason for an address in your resume is to facilitate a reply and further communication. Many applicants, especially in the Indian context, candidates mentions two addresses - a "permanent address" and then a "present address" - in their resumes. It is a confusing and irritating practice. In Resume there should be your current mailing address, your phone number and your email id.
Main guidelines for Design and Presentation of Resume
· The resume should be attractive and easy to read by the employer. A first look should automatically draw the attention of the reader. The main 1-2 points you want to strongly convey to the employer should be emphasized in resume. Employer can make an judgment that your resume is meeting his requirements. The quality should be in each facet of your presentation in resume. · Paper: You can use size A4 sheets (8.27" width and 11.69" height) and print only on one side of the paper. Because the standard size allows the employer to easily file your resume. While white or off-white paper is the standard but you can also use other light colored papers. · Font: Always Use clear typefaces like Verdana, Times New Roman, Helvetica or Tahoma. Always use font size of 9 to 14 points as appropriate - different fonts have different sizes for the same font size. · Cover: Please do not fold the resume. Use an A4+ or full-scale hard paper cover to mail your resume. Mention the address clearly at front and back. · Printing: Always print your resume by Laser. It is a simple, effective and cheap. · Design Consistency: In your resume you should follow simple and consistent rules of design. Italics, alignment, boldface, bulleting, underlining, and font sizes should reflect simplicity in your resume. Things which should be avoided in Resume:- As a general rule anything that takes away your chances of job success or any irrelevant data that simply takes away space and attention from your communication must not be in your resume. Some important irrelevant things are: · Resume Objective: Your objective should be simple - Why you are applying- to get the job. You should not waste the time of your potential employer and the space in your resume. Make a job target (or "job objective") that can be stated in about 5 or 6 words. Anything beyond that is probably "fluff" and indicates a lack of clarity and direction · Reasons for leaving a job: Do not mention a long reason for leaving any of your previous jobs. Any particular story can seldom present your earlier employer AND yourself in positive light, and should be definitely kept away from the resume. · "Resume" heading: Do not mention “Resume” as a heading because through your covering letter and through the header in your mailing cover and through a quarter-second-glance at your resume it will be obvious that it is actually a resume. Why waste valuable real estate for stating the obvious? · References: Each company has its own policies regarding references - which will not change irrespective of what you mention in your resume. So generally it is quite enough to indicate availability of references and reference should be reliable. · Negative Remarks: Avoid direct negative comments about any individual or institution. · Controversial Topics: Avoid any hint of controversy in your resume. It will reflect your good chance in interview because sometimes you are not able to defend yourself. · Do not include ‘No Kidding Information’: Always avoid statements like “Available for interview” or “References available upon request.” If you are sending a resume to a company, it should be a given that you are available for an interview and that you will provide references if requested. Just avoid items that will make the employer think “no kidding!”
